Fr. Doan was born and raised as a Catholic in Vietnam. His parents had 8 children but unfortunately, one of his younger sisters died at a young age due to Polio. He is the second child and the only son in the family. After living under Communist Regime for more than 2 years, his family escaped by coming to the United States as Vietnamese refugees in January 1978.
In the United States, he briefly attended one year of high school, then college and
transferred to UCLA. In 1985, he graduated from UCLA as an electrical engineer and worked for Hughes Aircraft Company, Radar System Group and Missiles System Group, designing guidance systems for warfare bombs and missiles.
While working for Hughes Aircraft Company, Fr. Doan restlessly questioned what he was designing and making, and at the same time wondered about what he had believed as a Catholic when his Protestant friends kept asking him about his Catholic faith. In discerning his faith, Fr. Doan decided to quit work at Hughes Aircraft Company and attended St. John’s Seminary in 1993. He was ordained as a priest for Los Angeles Archdiocese on May 30, 1998. During his 23 years in the priesthood, he has served at St. Genevieve Church in Panorama City, St. Francis De Sales Church in Sherman Oaks, St. Philomena Church in Carson, Nativity Church in El Monte, St. Anthony Church in Oxnard, and St. Dorothy in Glendora.
